Course Delivery Formats

UCLA Extension offers the following online instructional formats:

  • Online (Asynchronous)
    Online courses are primarily completed on your own schedule through Canvas, our online learning platform. You’ll have 24/7 access to course materials, with regular assignment deadlines to help you stay on track. These courses also include at least one hour of synchronous interaction with your instructor each week.
     
  • Live-Online (Synchronous)
    Live-Online courses take place in real time on scheduled days and times. You’ll meet online with your instructor and classmates using web-conferencing tools such as Zoom.

Be sure to review your course information and syllabus for specific meeting times, assignments, and participation requirements.

How to Access Your Online Course

Canvas is UCLA Extension’s cloud-based learning management system. You can access it through your web browser or the Canvas mobile app.

To get started, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to Canvas using the email address associated with your enrollment.
  2. Open your course and review the syllabus for important dates, assignments, instructor information, and course expectations.
  3. Depending on your course, materials may include readings, videos, discussion boards, webinars, and other learning activities.
  4. Participate in course discussions and contact your instructor with questions about assignments, your progress, or course topics.
  5. Complete and submit assignments through Canvas according to your course deadlines.

If your course includes live online meetings, you’ll find the meeting information in your Canvas course.
 

Canvas Technical Support 

Using Zoom for Live Online Meetings

Some UCLA Extension courses use Zoom for scheduled online meetings. Zoom allows you to meet with your instructor and classmates in real time.

If your course uses Zoom, you can access your meeting information through the Zoom area within your Canvas course.

How to Join a Zoom Meeting

  1. Log in to Canvas.
  2. Open your course.
  3. Select Zoom from the course navigation menu.
  4. Find your scheduled meeting and select Join.
  5. If prompted, select Open Zoom Meetings to launch Zoom.
