Course Waivers: Advanced Standing and Course Substitution

Prior coursework completed at UCLA or another accredited institution may be applied toward your certificate program. Course waivers may be requested through two options: advanced standing or course substitution. Please consult with an academic advisor to explore your options. 

Note: this process is different from a Completion Audit requested at the end of your program.

Applying Prior UCLA or Other Coursework towards a Certificate

  • Advanced Standing: Use credits or professional experience from other institutions to reduce the required number of courses or units. 
  • Course Substitution: Replace a required UCLA Extension course with another approved course without reducing the total units.

How to Request a Course Waiver

  1. Connect with an academic advisor at advising@uclaextension.edu to discuss which option your are eligible for based on your certificate program.
  2. Once you've decided, please include an official transcript and the course syllabus with your request. 
  3. Your request will be sent to the academic department for review.
  4. Approved waivers will be recorded in your student record.
