A course syllabus template is automatically populated inside your Canvas course, and you can edit it to provide information relevant to your course.
Canvas and Third-Party Cookies
Some course areas in Canvas, such as Course Syllabus, Zoom, and Videos (Panopto), require your browser to accept third-party cookies. If you experience an error accessing these areas, please review your browser third-party cookies settings.
Tip: Review these helpful tips prior to editing your syllabus:
- Maximize your internet browser window, ideally so that it takes up your whole screen; otherwise, the option to edit your syllabus may be hidden. When this happens, you'll have to use the window's scroll bars to make sure you can see all available options.
- The Course Syllabus area can time out when left open in Edit mode, so we recommend that you compose your content in our Microsoft Word syllabus template first, then paste it into the relevant sections of your Canvas syllabus so that you don't lose your work.
If you are missing a syllabus template, reach out to ATLI at learningsupport@uclaextension.edu.
To edit the Course Syllabus in your Canvas course, you'll first need to open it in Edit mode, then you'll need to individually edit each of its sections.
Enable Edit Mode
To edit the Course Syllabus:
- Click Course Syllabus in the course navigation menu.
- Click Syllabus above the UCLA Extension logo on the syllabus.
- Select Edit on the drop-down menu. The syllabus editor will appear as a horizontal sidebar to the left of the syllabus.
Edit a Section of the Course Syllabus
Each section of the Course Syllabus has its own editing options. To edit a section:
- Click the Pencil icon next to the left of the section that you would like to edit. The Edit Item window will appear.
- Enter your content in the Notes field.
- Click Save. (Please avoid clicking "Save & Notify," as this will send an email to your Program Representative.) The Edit Item window will close, and changes you made to the section of the Course Syllabus will now be displayed.
Please note that some sections of your syllabus are locked and cannot be edited:
- Description can only be edited by the Program Department.
- Institutional Policies and Additional Policies are pre-populated with standard UCLA Extension policies.
