Step-by-Step Guide to Applying for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA)

Applying for Federal Direct Loans through UCLA Extension begins with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Carefully follow the instructions below and on the UCLA Extension website here to ensure your application is complete.

FAFSA Application Procedure

To apply for federal financial aid, you must complete the FAFSA and submit the required supplementary application packet to UCLA Extension via your student portal. 

  1. Complete the FAFSA Online with the government: The first essential step is to fill out and submit the FAFSA, which determines your eligibility for federal aid. To do this: 

    1. Visit the FAFSA website at https://studentaid.gov/ 

    2. If you do not already have one, create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID.

    3. Fill out all required sections of the FAFSA, providing accurate financial and demographic information.

    4. List the UCLA Extension school code: 001315. UCLA and UCLA Extension share the same school code.

  2. Submit the UCLA Extension Financial Aid application: The FAFSA application online does not constitute a complete application. All students must submit a financial aid packet directly to the UCLA Extension student portal to finalize their aid request.

    3. Follow the detailed instructions within the packet to complete and submit all required supplementary documentation via your student portal.

After application submission

Once a completed application is received through your student portal, the approval process typically takes 2-3 business weeks. In some cases, students are selected for Verification, which may increase the processing time to 3-5 business weeks.

UCLA Extension is currently implementing a new University-wide financial aid system (Bruin Financial Aid). As this transition continues, we are experiencing delays in the processing of financial aid applications and disbursements.
