Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows eligible F-1 students to gain practical work experience in their field of study. Before applying for OPT, you must meet all eligibility requirements outlined below.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for Optional Practical Training, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- You must have maintained valid F-1 status while enrolled full-time for at least one full academic year (3 quarters) immediately before applying for OPT.
- You must be physically present in the United States and in valid F-1 status when your OPT application is submitted. You must also continue to maintain your F-1 status throughout the application process.
- The employment must be directly related to your major field of study.
- The position must be appropriate for your current level of education.
Important Information
- Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee OPT approval. All applications are reviewed and approved by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
- Students must continue to maintain valid F-1 status throughout the OPT application process and during any approved period of employment.
