I-20 Processing Times and Application Status
The Form I-20 is an important immigration document used to apply for an F-1 visa, transfer a SEVIS record, enter the United States in F-1 status, or maintain F-1 status while studying at UCLA Extension.
Before the I-20 application
Before ISS can review an I-20 application, students must first be admitted to an eligible international program and complete the required steps from International Programs Admissions.
For new international certificate students, the general process is:
- Submit the international program application
- Wait for application review
- Receive admission approval and deposit instructions
- Pay the required program deposit
- Receive instructions to complete the I-20 application
- Submit the I-20 application with all required documents
- Wait for ISS review
- Receive the digital Form I-20 by email after approval
How long does the process take?
Processing times can vary depending on the time of year, application volume, missing documents, payment status, SEVIS transfer timing, and whether the application requires additional review.
Students should submit all required documents as early as possible. Waiting until close to the program start date may delay visa scheduling, travel planning, class registration, or SEVIS transfer processing.
Submitting multiple follow up emails does not make the application move faster. In some cases, sending multiple emails may slow down the review process because staff must spend additional time responding to repeated status requests.
What “submitted” means
“Submitted” means the student has completed and sent the application or form for review.
It does not always mean the application has already been reviewed or approved. Applications are reviewed in the order received, unless there is an urgent issue that requires special handling.
What “in progress” means
“In progress” usually means the application has been started but has not fully submitted it
What “approved” means
“Approved” means the application or request has been reviewed and accepted.
After the I-20 is issued, students will receive a welcome email from ISS with the digital Form I-20 attached.
Why an I-20 application may be delayed
An I-20 application may take longer if:
• Required documents are missing
• The passport copy is unclear or expired
• Financial documents do not meet the required amount
• Bank documents are too old
• The sponsor information is incomplete
• Dependent information is missing
• A SEVIS transfer record has not been released yet
• The application was submitted during a high-volume period
Students should carefully review all instructions before submitting the application to avoid delays.
Financial documents
Students must submit financial documentation showing enough available funds for the program. If a sponsor is helping pay for the student’s studies, sponsor documentation will also be required.
Financial documents should be clear, complete, dated within the required timeframe and in English. Documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a proper English translation.
SEVIS transfer students
Students transferring an active SEVIS record to UCLA Extension must first be admitted and pay the required deposit before requesting a SEVIS release from their current school.
The I-20 cannot be issued until the SEVIS record has been properly released to UCLA Extension and all required documents have been reviewed.
Students should work with both schools to confirm the SEVIS release date and avoid gaps in status.
