Concurrent enrollment allows UCLA Extension students to enroll in UCLA regular session courses on a space-available basis. These courses are offered during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.
What is Concurrent Enrollment?
Concurrent enrollment refers to the process where Extension students attend classes alongside matriculated UCLA degree candidates. These courses are official UCLA regular session offerings, and while they are taught by UCLA faculty, the enrollment and record-keeping are managed by UCLA Extension.
Course Identification: Concurrent courses are recorded on UCLA Extension transcripts with the prefix "XLC."
Transcripting: Although you are taking a UCLA campus course, the credit is officially recorded by UCLA Extension as the agency of record.
Types of Concurrent Enrollment
There are two primary ways students participate in concurrent enrollment:
Individual Concurrent Enrollment: Students identify a specific UCLA course they wish to take and seek instructor approval to join the class if space permits.
Contract Concurrent Enrollment: This occurs when a specific number of seats in a UCLA course are reserved in advance for a cohort of Extension students, typically as part of a specialized certificate program.
Enrollment Process and Requirements
Enrolling in a concurrent course requires a specific set of steps to ensure academic eligibility and available capacity:
You must obtain permission from the UCLA instructor of record to join the course. Approval is usually granted only after the first week of classes once it is clear that space remains after all degree-seeking students have enrolled.
You must demonstrate that you have met the necessary academic prerequisites to succeed in the course.
Complete the Concurrent Enrollment application and submit the signed instructor approval to the UCLA Extension Registrar.
Students must pay the required tuition and fees to UCLA Extension. Note that concurrent enrollment fees may differ from standard Extension course fees.

Cross-Enrollment for CCC and CSU Students
Under California Education Code, undergraduate students currently in good standing at a California Community College (CCC) or California State University (CSU) may be eligible for simplified cross-enrollment:
Eligible students may enroll in one UCLA course per academic term (maximum of two per year).
A nonrefundable reduced cross-enrollment fee is applied.
To participate, you must obtain a statement of eligibility from the Registrar of your home campus.
Important Limitations
There is no "Concurrent Enrollment" during the summer, as UCLA Summer Sessions is already an open-enrollment institution.
Participating in concurrent enrollment does not constitute admission to UCLA as a degree-seeking student.
Once a student has enrolled and a grade has been earned, the "XLC" designation cannot be removed from the transcript, even if the student later matriculates to UCLA.
