The University of California does not permit the "auditing" of courses, which is defined as attending a class without formal enrollment. However, UCLA Extension offers two distinct enrollment statuses: Not for Credit (N) and Do Not Record (DNR) that allow students to participate in course instruction without receiving academic credit or a letter grade.
These two options cater to students seeking exposure to course material without undergoing a full evaluation.3 Enrollment under both options is available for all courses offered through UCLA Extension, except concurrent enrollment (XLC) in regular session UCLA classes.
1. Not for Credit (N)
The Not for Credit option allows students to enroll in credit-bearing classes solely for exposure to the material.
Requirements: Students are not required to take exams or complete projects, although they may choose to do so.
Transcript Record: The course enrollment will be recorded on the student's official transcript with an "N" designation, regardless of whether the student voluntarily completed assignments or exams.
2. Do Not Record (DNR)
The Do Not Record status is similar to the Not for Credit option, but is designed for greater privacy regarding enrollment.
Requirements: As with the "N" option, students are not required to take exams or submit projects, but they may participate in instruction.
Transcript Record: Unlike the "N" status, the Do Not Record (DNR) option ensures that the course enrollment will not appear on the student’s official transcript. This is designed for students who do not wish to share records of their enrollment with third parties, such as employers requesting transcript reviews for tuition reimbursement.
Important Restriction: N and DNR options are not available for students concurrently enrolled in regular session UCLA classes (XLC).
