While most UCLA Extension programs feature open enrollment, a select number of "admissions-based" or restricted certificate programs require a formal application and approval before you can establish candidacy or enroll in specific courses. Domestic students must meet specific academic or professional criteria to be eligible for these programs.
Admissions Process for Restricted Certificates
To apply for an admissions-based certificate program, follow the steps below:
-
Visit the certificate program page to confirm if the certificate is "restricted."
Review the "Application & Requirements" section for unique criteria such as minimum GPA, prior degrees (BA/BS), or professional experience.
Please refer to the certificate program page for specific application deadlines.
-
Unlike open enrollment programs, restricted programs may require:
Official Transcripts
Resumé or Cover Letter
A brief essay outlining your goals and reasons for joining the program.
Letters of Recommendation
Navigate to the certificate program page and click "Apply Now." You will be prompted to log in to your student portal or create a new account.
Pay the non-refundable application fee.
-
After submission, the academic department will review your application.
This process can take about 5–14 business days.
Once your application is approved, you will receive an official notice of admission.
