Certificate Structure

According to UCLA Extension Policy AA 150, courses within a certificate program fall into distinct categories, each impacting your path to completion:

  • Required Courses: Satisfactory completion of these courses is absolutely required as a condition of completing the program and receiving the award.

  • Elective Courses: These courses are used to fulfill overall unit requirements and may be selected from a list of approved electives. 

Typically, you can find the required and elective courses in a certificate by going to the certificate page and scrolling down to 'courses'. Click on 'see more courses' where available to review the entire curriculum. The screenshots below may help. 

 

Special note on prerequisite courses: 

Prerequisites typically help you prepare for required and elective course classes. These courses:

  • Do not count toward the total units minimally required for completion of the certificate. 

  • Can be recommended, required, or enforced at the time of registration. 

You are encouraged to carefully review a course description and note any prerequisites you may need to complete for the course. These are typically noted under the "About this Course" section. A few examples are below.
