UCLA Extension offers various grading and credit options to suit students' needs. Although letter grades are standard for credit, you may request a grading or credit option change. Note: certificate programs require letter grades.
Grading and Credit Options
For Credit: Letter Grade Student work is evaluated with a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F). Both the final grade and the academic credit earned will be recorded on the official transcript. Note that this option is not available for 800-series courses.
For Credit: Passed/Not Passed (P/NP) Work is evaluated as either Passed or Not Passed. This designation and the attempted credit units appear on the transcript. This option is not available for 800-series courses.
Not for Credit: Non-credit This option does not require assignments or exams, and student work is not evaluated. Enrollment is recorded on the transcript with a grade of "N."
Not for Credit: Continuing Education Units (CEUs) The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized unit of measurement for participation in non-credit professional development programs. No exams or assignments are required, and a grade of "CEU" is posted to the transcript once the instructor confirms participation.
Do Not Record Students participate in the course without evaluation or required assignments. No record of the enrollment will appear on the student's transcript. This option is unavailable for concurrent courses with the prefix "XLC."
Changing Your Credit Option
If you wish to change your grading or credit option, please follow the steps below:
Verify that the course is not required for a certificate program, as these must be taken for a letter grade.
Email your request to studentrecords@uclaextension.edu.
Submit your request by the Sunday before the final week of the course or before the final exam, whichever occurs first.
Requests will not be approved if the final exam has already been taken or if the final project has been submitted. For more details, visit the Policies page on the UCLA Extension website.
