Course Grading Structures
Undergraduate Level (Courses 1–199): Uses a letter-graded scale including A, B, C, D, and F. Alternatively, students can choose the Passed/Not Passed (P/NP) option. A passing "P" grade requires work equivalent to a "C" or higher.
Graduate and Professional Level (Courses 200–600): Uses a letter-graded scale including A, B, C (excluding C-), and F. Alternatively, students can select the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) option. A satisfactory "S" grade requires work equivalent to a "B" or higher.
Special and Administrative Grade Indicators
I (Incomplete): Assigned if you completed the majority of the coursework with passing quality but cannot finish a minor portion due to good cause. You must resolve an Incomplete by the end of the next quarter, or it automatically lapses into an F, NP, or U.
DR (Deferred Report): Indicates a pending administrative review concerning student rights and responsibilities.
IP (In Progress): A temporary designation indicating that the final grade is currently pending course completion.
W (Withdrawal) or NR (Not Recorded): Internal markers visible only within your student portal to denote course drops or unsubmitted instructor records.
Important Academic Rules
Certificate students must take all required curriculum courses for a letter grade and maintain the minimum GPA specified by their academic program department. If you need to request an alternate grading option, send an email to studentrecords@uclaextension.edu.
