Yes. Students may repeat any Creative Writing course and still receive credit toward their Creative Writing Certificate.
Many students choose to retake a course with a different instructor because each instructor brings their own unique approach, readings, writing exercises, and workshop experience. However, students are also welcome to retake a course with the same instructor. This is especially common in advanced, workshop-focused courses such as Novel IV, Short Story III, and Continuing Poet.
Repeated courses remain valuable because students work with new writing prompts, different reading materials, and fresh feedback on their developing projects.
Common Examples
Students writing in specialized genres, such as Picture Books, often repeat advanced coursework to continue developing their manuscripts. Since the sequence includes only Picture Book I, Picture Book II, and Picture Book III, it is common for students to:
- Retake Picture Book II with a different instructor.
- Enroll in Picture Book III multiple times while continuing work on a project.
Because these courses are heavily workshop-based, students often find significant value in repeating them.
Certificate Audit Information
If you repeat a Creative Writing course, the additional credit will need to be manually added to your certificate after the course is completed. This is a routine process, and repeated courses are reviewed and updated as part of the certificate completion and Capstone approval process.
If you have questions about repeating a specific course or how it will apply to your certificate requirements, please contact advising@uclaextension.edu for further assistance.
