Where Should I Start?
New to poetry or looking to strengthen your fundamentals?
- Poetry Toolbox (WRITING X 432.10E) introduces essential poetic techniques, forms, imagery, voice, and craft elements.
- A great starting point for writers who want a foundation before enrolling in workshop-based poetry courses.
Core Poetry Sequence
After developing your fundamentals, students can progress through the structured poetry sequence:
Poetry I (WRITING X 431.1)
- Explore the fundamentals of poetic craft.
- Write original poems and participate in workshop discussions.
- Develop skills in imagery, sound, form, and revision.
Poetry II (WRITING X 431.2)
- Build on concepts introduced in Poetry I.
- Refine your voice and experiment with more advanced techniques.
- Continue developing a portfolio of original work.
Poetry III (WRITING X 431.3)
- Advanced workshop experience.
- Focus on revision, manuscript development, and strengthening an individual poetic style.
- Designed for students with prior poetry workshop experience.
Additional Poetry Electives
The Prose Poem (WRITING X 432.14E)
- Explore the unique form that blends elements of poetry and prose.
- Experiment with structure, narrative, imagery, and lyricism.
The Continuing Poet (WRITING X 432.20E)
- For writers who have completed substantial poetry coursework or have ongoing poetry projects.
- Continue generating new work while receiving instructor and peer feedback.
