The Horticulture certificate program consists of 6 required courses and 4 elective units, or 4 internship units. Most eligible Horticulture elective courses are 4 units, however, a number are 2 or 5 units, so make sure to confirm on the individual course page how many units a course is. Those who wish to pursue the certificate program can complete their studies in as little as four quarters (one year).
Horticulture certificate courses can be taken in any order. However, students who are new to horticulture or gardening are advised not to begin with Introduction to Irrigation Practices (BIOLOGY X 499.97), as a basic understanding of plant life and irrigation needs is recommended before taking this course. Students without this background are encouraged to complete Soils and Plant Nutrition (BIOLGY X 493.2) and Plant Material for Landscape Use (BIOLGY X 499) before enrolling in Introduction to Irrigation Practices.
Please note, the certificate curriculum is designed to serve students in Southern California and the Pacific Time Zone (PT). Course curriculum focuses on horticulture practices and plants common to Southern California.
